The Olympus SP-500UZ features Olympus’ TruePic TURBO Image Processor, a 6.0 megapixel sensor, along with an impressive 10x optical zoom. Optional macro, tele, and wide conversion lenses can be added to the existing lens.  The camera weighs in at 285 g (10.1 oz) excluding the four AA batteries required. 

This camera is no different from other Olympus cameras in its choice to use the small xD picture card, which is now available in a high speed format. Although the zoom capability is impressive, it is sometimes not a seamless motion, especially when quickly zooming. One main issue with this camera is the lack of image stabilization, yet it performs exceptionally well without this feature. 

Pictures can be taken with full manual control in the uncompressed RAW format or as a JPEG.  The camera is built and designed with a solid body and an ergonomic grip, an important feature lacking on many of today’s comparable cameras.  Picture quality is good as expected from this level of Olympus camera.  The camera makes good use of available lighting and is able to capture high-quality clear images. 

Outside, the SP-500UZ performs very well, properly exposing the pictures and creating contrast between different areas in the frame.  In bright and low light conditions colors are accurately captured.  With its large array of beginner-friendly shooting modes, a very effective 3cm macro mode, and a useful built-in help guide, photography can be enjoyable and beneficial for even the amateur photographer.  A very effective 3cm (1.18”) macro mode creates detailed images indoors or out. 
 

Form Factor

The camera is smartly designed inside and out. Pictures can be seen on either the large 2.5” 115,000 pixel LCD display or through the 201,600 pixel electronic viewfinder.  Learning the often time consuming menus and functions takes only minutes to master.  Functionality is simple with an easy print one-touch button and on-camera editing options.

Olympus makes it simple for any level of photographer to pick up the camera and with little or no instruction begin taking quality pictures.  It is a camera for everyone and any situation whether demanding or just for fun. This camera offers experienced photographers and amateurs alike not only an easy to use product, but also one of quality and capability.  With a street price of around $300 US, this camera proves to be a great buy.
